Alabamian with diabetes built her own artificial pancreas, gives away plan for free

Dana Lewis is a good name to remember the next time you hear somebody say Alabama's mostly good for football and barbecue.
Lewis, a University of Alabama graduate who grew up in Huntsville, used social media, computer skills and mail-order parts to invent an artificial pancreas for people with diabetes. Along with co-inventor and husband Scott Leibrand, she's now giving her discovery away.
The device is a success - hundreds of people are using it, including Lewis - and it is bringing the young inventors increasing attention. Just this spring, Fast Company put the 28-year-old Lewis on its 2017 list of America's 100 "most creative people in business."
Diabetes is caused when the pancreas fails to make the insulin that helps the body turn glucose from sugar and carbohydrates into energy. Without insulin, sugar builds up in the blood stream. With too much insulin, it can fall to dangerously low levels. For diabetics, staying in the safe center is a constant challenge.
"You really do make hundreds of decisions a day about things that impact your blood sugar," Lewis said last week from her current home in Seattle.  "It's a lot. And it really does impact everybody who cares for a person with diabetes - spouses, siblings, parents, grandparents. Oftentimes, a person with diabetes is surrounded by a half-a-dozen people who help care for them and love them."
Lewis was an example of that. She moved to Seattle for a job after graduating from Alabama. The daughter of a Huntsville engineer, she attended Grissom High School before going to Tuscaloosa.

At the university, Lewis minored in an honors research program that had her spend two years learning to program computers and two years working on projects that used them.
"That's where I got my first hands-on experience with coding," Lewis said, "and what was great about the program is it wasn't about training you to be a computer scientist." Instead, the goal was teaching "foundational skills" in computing to "use for whatever you decide you're interested in."
Living alone in Seattle, Lewis had a continuous glucose monitor and an insulin pump. But it wasn't enough.
"I was afraid at night because I am a super-deep, champion sleeper," Lewis said, "I sleep through the alarms on the device that are supposed to wake me up and save my life. I always thought, if only I could get my data off this thing, then I could use my phone or computer to make louder alarms."
The data Lewis wanted was from the monitor's checks on her blood sugar level every five minutes. The alarms were to warn her to eat sugar to raise a low glucose level or take insulin to lower a high one.

Enter social media.
In November 2013, Lewis saw a picture on Twitter. Someone had figured how to get the data off his continuous glucose monitor. "I reached out to him and said, 'Hey, can you share that?'" she said, "and he said yes."
Lewis was now in the Internet's "DIY (do-it-yourself)" space. She used the shared code successfully to get the data off her own device, then sent it to the cloud and back to her phone to make louder alarms. At first, that's all she wanted.
Then, Lewis thought "it would be nice for somebody else to see my data since I live alone." She programmed a Web interface to share the data with her boyfriend and, if he didn't respond, with her mother in Huntsville.
"Within the first couple of weeks of building this thing, I had two different instances where I was sleeping, I was low (blood sugar), I did not wake up to the alarm, and my boyfriend got his alarm and was able to call me.... And I woke up, drank juice, and everything was fine."

This was a real, meaningful life change, but the couple kept going. "I was giving the system data, and we figured out how to use that data and actually predict in the future what was going to happen," she said. "So, not only was I getting alarms saying, hey, right now you need to do something, but in an hour, your blood sugar is going to be low, but if you do a little bit of something now, you won't be stopped in your tracks later."
They had built an algorithm based on the data to predict the future. But it was still basically just an open loop. She got a recommendation from the monitor and had to act. She had to decide "what level of action do I want to be woken up for?"
The next step came quickly.
"We thought, wouldn't it be nice if, on the insulin side, instead of having to wake up and push a button on my pump, it could automatically adjust the pump for me," Lewis said.
She wasn't sure she needed this - she'd solved the super-sleep problem, after all - but social media stepped in again. "We found somebody else who had figured out how to directly communicate with my insulin pump and actually send commands to it," Lewis said. "And he's like, 'You know, you could plug this into your system and actually send commands to your insulin pump.' And he, too, shared his code. That's what open source is: free sharing of code."
They closed the loop. Result: an artificial pancreas that monitors blood sugar and controls the insulin pump.

"It gets data from what I've done, it gets my blood sugar and it says, huh, your blood sugar is rising, you need more insulin. So instead of 'alarming' and saying, Dana, wake up and take more insulin, it just sends a command to my pump that says increase the insulin a little bit for the next 30 minutes. And then in 5 minutes, it gets more data and sees what it's done ...."
The computer makes these small adjustments every five minutes, never gets tired of doing the math, never sleeps and never fails to calculate precisely.
Lewis couldn't have done this even five years ago.
"I really do think it was the perfect combination of people being on social media, this growing concept of open-source collaboration and sharing the code, but also even the commercial hardware getting to where it was," she said.
"The first computer we used was actually a small Raspberry Pi. That's a small, credit-card sized computer, you can buy it on Amazon for $35-$40, and we plugged the radio stick into that, and that's what I carried with me to become the closed loop."
They've since downsized even more. Using an Intel Edison chip, Lewis's current artificial pancreas is "basically like a Tic Tac case in your pocket," she said.
It was December of 2014 when Dana's system was fully working. "I pretty much knew immediately this is not something I can keep to myself," she said.
To make and distribute it would violate federal regulations, and to become a company would mean dealing with those regulations. But there is no rule about launching a blueprint on the Internet. "So that's what we did," Lewis said, "and that's why we called it Open APS, which stands for open-sourced pancreas system."
You can go to openaps.org now and see Lewis's documentation and her code. You can look at the reference design and decide, in her words, "Do I want to do this?" You can also watch her explain the system further here.
Some people want to wait for a commercial device - some are in clinical trials now - and Lewis supports that decision, too. But if you don't want to wait, you don't have to wait. If you want to take some control back from diabetes, you can.
Since the website went up, Lewis said hundreds of people have built their own device. She and her husband now speak and present at diabetes conferences, and they continue to work on the program with the online diabetes community. They support the development of commercial devices because manufacturers can make enough to help thousands of people, not just hundreds.
The impact is even bigger, Lewis said, because the artificial pancreas isn't just affecting people with diabetes. It's affecting everyone who cares for them.
"This is a really, really meaningful change," she said, "and I can't imagine going back to what I call the dark ages of not having my family having visibility into my blood sugars and what's going on and the ability to control these things."

View Leylines on Google Earth

from http://www.vortexmaps.com/hagens-grid-google.php

SETTING UP GOOGLE EARTH

The basic Google Earth program is available for PC and Mac—free!—at http://earth.google.com.
SETTING UP THE UVG “UVG-grid-compiled-by-B-Hagens.kmz” FILE In the upper left corner of the Google Earth screen, click File. Then click Open. You will be able to browse to where you have downloaded “UVG-grid-compiled-by-B-Hagens.kmz.” Click on it, and it will appear in the “Places” menu on the left.
VIEWING AND HIDING LINES
You can view the UVG Grid in many ways.  If you click on the little triangle next to a file or folder name, and a dropdown menu appears. Click on the check mark by the title of any folder or file, and everything in that it disappears from the screen. Click the same spot, and it reappears.
If you go into the folder titled “Regular Geometric Solids,’ you can see subfolders and can look at (or hide) all of the different geometric figures and great circles that make up the UVG Grid. The edges of many of the figures overlap each other, and sometimes meet up to create “great circles.’
Every line of the UVG is part of a great circle (equator) that divides the sphere of Earth in half.  This is the major change that Bill Becker and I made to the “planetary grid’ model (shown here) proposed in the 1970s by  three Russian men Makarov (an engineer), Morozov (a linguist), and Goncharov (a historian). I visited Makarov in Moscow in 1994, and he told me that they believed the dodecahedron was fundamental. It aligned very closely with the mid-Atlantic ridge. That was their beginning orientation. Archaeological alignments (such as Pt. 1 being so close to the Great Pyramid) became visible later.
Bill Becker, with whom I worked closely on this project for 12 years from 1981 until 1993, was a colleague of Buckminster Fuller. Bill´s first impression of the Russian grid was that it was an incomplete synergetic structure. He realized that the red arrows of “force’ coincided with a figure relatively unknown at the time—the rhombic tetrahedron. This figure is now a staple of the new carbon 3 geometries and quasicrystal research. By adding these line segments, we discovered that the entire grid was composed of 15 great circles (hoops)—which tied it to Lakota creation mythology. The 15 hoops created 120 identical right triangles—which tied it exactly to Plato´s description of the divine feminine receptacle in Timaeus.  The Basic UVG Grid—conceptualized as a “crystal,’ each of the triangles having a flat surface—would be called a hexakis icosahedron. We believe the synergetic structural principles of this geometry are system characteristics of Earth.
COLOR CODING
The vertices (corners) of all five Platonic Solids—and two other diamond-faced regular figures, the rhombic triacontahedron and rhombic dodecahedron—align with the 62 grid points (“corners’) of the Basic UVG Grid (a “spherical’ hexakis icosahedron). Several of the figures can be positioned within the 62 points of the Grid in more than one way. A tetradhedron, for example, will align in 10 different positions. The UVG Grid maps all of these different possibilities. In the list below, the number in parentheses after the name of a figure indicates the number of placements that are possible.
Line Color     Geometric Association         Esoteric Meaning
Red Tetrahedron edges (10) Fire
Yellow Cube edges (5) Earth
White Octahedron edges (5) White
Black Icosahedron edges (1) Water
Green Dodecahedron edges (1) Aether
Dark Blue Rhombic Dodecahedron (5)
Violet Rhombic Triacontahedron (1)
Buckminster Fuller´s Icosahedral Great Circle Set
Orange “Yang’ great circles Each circle connects antipodal vertices of the Dodecahedron through two octahedra vertices
Light Blue “Yin’ great circles Each circles connects antipodal vertices of the Icosahedron through two octahedra vertices
Lime Green “Balance’ great circles Each circles connects antipodal octahedron vertices through eight octahedra vertices
ADDING OTHER LINES AND GRIDS
In the lower right hand corner, click the push-pin icon, then click Path in the drop-down menu. You will then need to purchase and download Google Earth Plus if you don't already have it. This will cost you just $20/year. Then you can draw lines and add overlays. (Google Earth Pro will allow you to make animations, but it costs $400/year.)
Clicking on Path in Google Earth Plus allows you to name and choose a location to save your path (line). The "Advanced" tab in the dialog box lets you select color, width, etc. of the line. Also, you can choose the altitude at which you want to draw your lines. You must keep the Path dialog box open while you are creating your line. (Just shrink the box and move it to the side.) If you click “OK,’ the dialog box will close and appear somewhere in the drop-down menu on the left side of the screen. To open it back up, left click the name you´ve given the path, right click the name to see the drop-down menu, and choose Edit. with a left click. Then you can create your line and/or add as many line segments as you want.
The editing and saving is just plain clumsy, and you have to be patient. When the Path dialog box is open, you´ll mark a beginning point and/or a line segment to any point on the screen that you left click. Use the navigation dial at the bottom center of the screen to move to the location you want. You can delete line segments moving backwards from where you are by right clicking. Every right click removes the previous segment, so you need to keep your attention focused :-)
Clicking the “Fly To’ command at the upper left of the screen can be really useful. If you enter a location (name or Lat/long coordinates) in the box just below “Fly To’ and click Go, it will take you to that location and then store it in the space below. You can use either decimals or degree-minute-sec coordinates (+ and -, or NSEW). By left clicking an entry in the “Fly To’space, then right-clicking to open a drop-down menu, you can edit and rename and so forth. If you double left-click an entry, you will fly to the location.  When the Path dialog box is open, the only way you can get to a location quickly is to type its coordinates into the “Fly To’ box.  BEWARE!! If you close Google Earth, all the locations in the space below “Fly To’ disappear. I haven´t found a way to save them there.
The advantage to working at a very low altitude setting is that you can be accurate and you can make a loop path. You cannot click exactly on top of a point you've already made, so the low altitude lets you eliminate too much error. The program is pretty intuitive, and you'll quickly get the hang of it.

The Sasquatch Message to Humanity: Conversations with Elder Kamooh

The sasquatch are the fifth of 6 sentient races created by the "star council", a council of extra terrestrial races running the spiritual evolution platform that is the solar system.  Humanity is the 6th sentient race. The others are the Fish People (water elementals), Lizard People (reptilians) , Ant People (gray aliens) , and Bird People (fairies).

The sasquatch live to be up to 10,000 years old, they are telepathic and have amazing psychic abilities, and they do not need to talk. They are also very spiritually evolved, allowing them to read the akashic library like a book. This makes this history given by a sasquatch very, very credible to those who have an open mind. It puts together very cleanly many elements of human myth and explains them very simply.

This account explains Nibiru and the Annunaki, Tiamat and Marduk / Maldek (the broken up planet that is today's asteroid belt), the galactic war, the archons, Pangea (the first continent) and the individual events that caused the breaking up of the continents. It also explains the causes of each of the mass extinctions on Earth.

This is a 13 part lecture of the true nature of the spirit from the perspective of an alien being

The alien being's name was "Airl", a Zeta Reticuli, commonly known as a "Gray".

Next is an interview of Judy Caroll, a human who goes up into her starship and takes a Gray (Zeta Reticuli) body and serves on the starship at night.

Judy's book Human by Day, Zeta by Night (https://www.amazon.com/Human-Day-Zeta-Night-Incarnating/dp/0926524712) is a fictional work that speaks of what happened just before Airl's ship crashed, and just after she returned to their home. In short, she was sent back to Earth to live among us humans

Here is an excerpt from Human by Day, Zeta by Night

Chapter 41

...

"Alarca," my Teacher Maris called to me, “please come into my office. There's something I need to discuss with you-a special job that needs to be carried out." "Damn!" I thought to myself. "Surely with all the computers down, we'd be able to finish work early!" Picking up telepathically on my rebelliousness, Solarno grinned broadly and winked at me. "Now, now, Alarca, Guardian Workers are supposed to work-not fantasize about knocking off early. Only humans are allowed to do that!" "Right," said my venerable Teacher, seating himself behind the large console that took up a goodly portion of his office space: "I have a project for you, Alarca - a project that requires your special expertise as a Guardian manifesting in human form on Planet Earth in a diplomatic role." "Oh, dear,” I thought to myself, "that sounds ominous." The look he cast in my direction told me he'd picked up on me telepathically, but of course he would've. Sometimes I must think
I'm in my human form with a closed off mind.

Ignoring my questionable train of thought, Maris went on, "Alarca, the young worker, Entil, is having a lot of problems with a human child named Kate with whom he is supposed to be working. She is being brought on board for classes in one of our children's circles, but every time he approaches her she still becomes quite hysterical with fear. It's time she began to understand things on a more conscious level, but fear is blocking her so badly that extra help is required.
"Ashka has made contact with her in human form, trying to explain things a little more clearly, and I know you have also mether briefly on a visit to her mother's house, but I feel that if you were to accompany Entil into her room at night, dressed in your Earthling container so she can see the pair of you interacting in a friendly and non-threatening way, she may lose some of her terror. Surely seeing a human being alongside her ET visitor will help to allay her fear."
"But Maris, wouldn't it be better for Ashka to do this? After all, she is a mother in her human form on Earth and therefore much more experienced in relating to and communicat

ing with children than I am. Why can't she do it?" "Because it is nother job! Her work is to look after the hybrid children here on the disc, and right now we have over a dozen poor little mites that we confiscated from that Earth laboratory last week. Ashka has spent much time matching up DNA samples trying to locate their human mothers so we can bring them here to provide the maternal love they so desperately need. No wonder the poor little things are so listless and lethargic! I do wish these human scientists would stop trying to play God, dabbling and experimenting in areas where they totally lackproper spiritual understanding. Surely they realize human life is more than just physical genetics! I'm sorry, I'm off on a tangent. Butno, Ashka has her hands full at the moment. It is up to you.” "Maris, on the subject of trying to get through to these children, what happened with the Russian boy we visited a while back? He was so sick and so scared. Ishe any better now?" "Yes, he is, as a matter of fact, but we only just intervened in time. The Controllers were starting to infiltrate his mind, causing him to fall into trance states during which he would

recite all these very complex mathematical and scientific formulas, which of course had everyone around him firmly convinced that he was some sort of miraculous and very advanced 'Star Child." However, cunningly mixed in with this information some very negative things were also being conveyed through him, including dire warnings of 'evil gray aliens' coming to Earth to interfere with people, which was part of why he was so scared of us. "After that night you came along with me, he started becoming more aware of the difference between the Controller-inspired contact and our genuine contact, and once he began to wake up consciously, we were able to reach him more easily to heal him on all levels. We placed an implant into his body to help alleviate the lung problem he'd developed, and he's now moved past his fear and is living a normal and much happier life. "Now, Alarca, back to our difficulties with Kate - it's really just a matter of your helping her to overcome her fear enough to allow Entil to place the palms of his hands on hers, so their heart chakra channels that run down the arms into the hands will reconnect and instantaneously she should feel the love energy between the two of them. It will only take seconds."

And so it was - no refusing an Elder. Utilizing the blue beam of light energy, Entil and I transported ourselves from the hovering disc down into Kate's bedroom. Using our eyes we paralyzed her as she began to wake up. It took a bit of focused concentration on my part to maintain a human appearance while in this altered astral state, and I hoped that I wasn't looking too wavy around the edges, because the last thing needed was to make her even more scared than she already was. As her terrified gaze fell upon us, I greeted her in as friendly and non-threatening a way as possible, "Hi Kate! Don't you recognize me? I'm your mom's friend Ali. Please don't be scared we're not going to hurt you, I promise." Kate said something, but because Entil and I were in the astral state, we couldn't quite make out her physical speech. Once again, here I was faced with this damned communication issue between the energy fields. I held my hand up. "Hang on, Kate, I can't hear you. You need to think your words clearly to me with your mind. Just concentrate hard on what you want to say and I'll understand. Our communication needs to be telepathic.”

"Oh, yes, Ali, and you're also Kaz's friend, aren't you? Her daughter Kira and I go to the same school, and Kaz told me Kira and Ben both have ET visitors coming to them at night too, and not to be scared, but I can't help it - they look so weird." She cast a quick sideways glance at Entil and shuddered.
"Look, Kate, I know he does seem a bit strange, but truly, he won't hurtyou. Why don't you try just reaching out and letting him touch your hand-come on, please. I promise nothing bad will happen."
"Wh...what did you say his name is?"
"It's Entil, spelt E-n-t-i-l, and maybe you can'tremember, but he used to visit you when you were a very young child."
"And what about the really scary tall one dressed all in black who comes as well? That one is even worse!"
"That is Entil's Teacher, Garnibis, who accompanies him sometimes. She's very old and wise, and you have absolutely nothing to fear from her."

"And are you sure he won't do anything to me if he touches me? He won't paralyze me again?” "Kate, I promise, you have my word. Just hold your hands out with palms facing upwards, and try to relax so he can touch you. Believe it or not, he's really sad that you're scared of him. You used to play together when you were little. Go on, just reach out to him." Trembling slightly, Kate held her hands out towards Entil, and as she did so I instructed him to come forward slowly so as not to frighten her, but he hesitated. "Are you sure, Alarca? I don't want to upset her and make things worse." A look of trepidation filled his eyes, and for a moment Ithought he was going to cry. "Go on, Entil," I encouraged him, "it'll be okay.” There I was between these two scared beings-talk about an intergalactic ambassador With eyes closed tightly, Kate tried to hold her hands steady as Entil reached out towards her and very gently gripped her hands so as to bring the center of his palms against hers. "That's it, Kate!" I encouraged. "Try to relax-he won't hurtyou. Just see if you can feel the

energy passing between his hands and yours.” Frowning in deep concentration, she stayed still and unresponsive for a moment, then her fingers began to close on Entil's hands, as an incredibly strong energy current passed between them. Kate's eyes suddenly opened, and her face lit up with a look of total amazement as recognition dawned, along with an expression of profound joy, and the next moment they were hugging each other like old friends. "Entil," Kate cried, "of course I remember you! You were the one who used to lift me up out of my cot when I was tiny, and take me to play with the other children. We used to have so much fun floating those pretty-colored blocks around the room and making lights turn on and off with our minds. How could I ever have forgotten! And that's what you've been doing again, isn't it? Taking me to classes on the big disc? Now I finally understand why I'm suddenly so smart at math." The look of sheer relief in Entil's eyes said it all, and the next moment they were chatting away telepathically, almost unaware of my presence.
